How to light a petrol station forecourt

Basic principles

GMK Development and Marketing Pte Ltd provided a few basic principles on how to light a petrol station forecourt. By following the guideline from BS EN 12464-2 Light and Lighting – Outdoor Workplaces

  • General illuminance had to be around 300-350 lux at floor level.
  • The uniformity ratio shall be no greater than four to one (4:1)
  • Ensure petrol pumps are well lit, with minimum 100 lux, on the face of the pumps.
  • Consider the vehicles that will be using the petrol station forecourt and ensure that there will still be sufficient light and no dark patches when in use.
  • Typical spacings with a canopy height of 4.5m would be 4-5 meters between luminaires.

Example settings using Dimmable Driver

Luminaires can be individually programmed to dim or switch in areas of low occupancy or in daylight conditions.

Petrol forecourt lighting can be set as required with an emphasis on the following scenarios:

  • Best appearance – realizing energy savings without compromising on feeling of security.
  • Maximum energy savings – for the lowest running costs.

The driver should be easily to re-program at any time

The illustration below displays some example settings for lighting a typical petrol station forecourt:

Lighting Zone Best appearance Maximum energy saving
Zone 1
Main entrance and exit
On at 30% output Switch off on daylight, on all night at 30%
Zone 2
Shop entrance and exit
Switched off when sufficient daylight, on all night at full output. Switched off when sufficient daylight, dims down to 30% 5 minutes after last detected movement.
Zone 3
Main re-fueling area
Switched off when sufficient daylight, at night dims to 30% 5 minutes after last detected movement. Stays at 30% until dawn, or next detected movement. Switched off when sufficient daylight, dims down to 30% after 5 minutes, then switches off 10 minutes later if no further movement is detected.
Zone 4
Air/water pumps
Switched off when sufficient daylight, at night dims to 30% 5 minutes after last detected movement. Stays at 30% until dawn, or next detected movement. Switched off when sufficient daylight, dims down to 30% after 5 minutes, then switches off 10 minutes later if no further movement is detected.
